Black Mary & Gunjies
Black Mary was first staged in 1997 at Sydney St Theatre and again in the Festival of the Dreaming for Company B Belvoir St Theatre.

The West Australian Academy of Performing Arts will produce Black Mary in November 2026 in Perth.
Julie has B Arts, M Arts, B Visual Arts and Dip Ed. She has received numerous grants and fellowships including the Developing Writer’s Fellowship, Australia Council; Two Asialink Literature Residencies in Indonesia. Writer in residence at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre in Ireland, Australia Council. In 2013 Julie was recipient of the B R Whiting Studio Rome residence, Australia Council.
Some of her produced plays: GUNJIES; BLACK MARY; LOTUS WAR; SEASON TO TASTE were performed at Belvoir St Theatre Sydney. BLACK MARY was a main stage Company B Belvoir St Theatre production with SOCOG for the Festival of the Dreaming. Black Mary was also produced at the Phoenix Theatre in Arizona USA. LOTUS WAR and SEASON TO TASTE were produced for the Adelaide Fringe Festival and the Belvoir St Asian Arts Festival and ABC National radio. THE CROCODILE HOTEL was work shopped in Makassar, Sulawesi, Indonesia, with assistance from Asialink. THE EYES OF MAREGE was produced by the Australian Performance Exchange at the Sydney Opera House Studio and at the Adelaide Festival Centre for the Ozasia Festival.
Julie’s awards include GUNJIES, Highly Commended, Human Rights Award and was nominated for an AWGIE. THE CROCODILE HOTEL was shortlisted for the Patrick White Award and the Griffin Award. BLACK MARY & GUNJIES have been published by Aboriginal Studies Press.
Julie has worked as a Senior Research Associate on the History of Aboriginal Sydney project: www.historyofaboriginalsydney.edu.au. This received a NSW Heritage Award.
She has worked collaboratively on many cross-cultural projects to enable artists to express the connections and clashes between traditional forms and contemporary sensibilities between Asia, Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australia.
